The Music Notes Club held a meeting and tryouts on March 27 for current members and students interested in joining in the Arts & Science Center Theater at the Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus.
Music Notes is a student club dedicated to showcasing students’ musical ability. This meeting was open to anyone looking to practice music as a group and expand their musical knowledge and abilities with other students.
Matthew Moore, a medical lab technician student and new member of Music Notes, was at the meeting to express himself with music and practise with other talented musicians.
“Music used to be a huge influence in my life, I used to have a string of musicians in my family,” Moore said. “Music’s just something that you can express yourself with, it’s kind of like painting and writing and talking without using any words.”
Moore said he was initially nervous about joining the meeting, but became increasingly comfortable after seeing how welcoming and supportive everyone was. He described the process of trying out as relaxed and free spirited.
“They’re not really controlling, they actually like it when you bring your own piece into the group,” Moore said.
Moore said to join Music Notes students should contact Erin Schutt, the club advisor, to schedule a tryout necessary to determine skill level and musical taste.
“We play music, we try to play some songs, learn some songs, and one of our goals this semester, and maybe part of the summer as well, is to create our own CD,” said Moore.
Communications student Seth Kwiecien was attending his first Music Note Club meeting and said he was there to learn more about the club and possibly propose some ideas of his to standing members. Kwiecien came to the meeting with fellow student and friend, Jake Mason.
“We (Kwiecien and Mason) really want to start doing live performances around locally and would like to organize some type of band at some point and this is just our jumping off point for that,” said Kwiecien.
Mason, an information security student, was interested in meeting other musicians as well as playing music with them. Instruments Mason plays include the guitar and bass, he also hopes to learn the drums and keyboard.
“I expect to put on concerts and form a band with my friends and musicians,” said Mason.
Mason played Led Zeppelin’s “Over The Hills And Far Away,” for his audition and played some other songs upon request. The current club members and newcomers spent most of the time practising together, collaborating, and providing each other with constructive criticism.
Music Notes is dedicated to playing music both on and off campus and is interested in performing for civic and community service organizations. Students interested in practising and performing music in this club should contact Erin Schutt at eschutt@dtcc.edu.
