GEORGETOWN — A ceremony to honor veterans took place at the Wall of Heros on the Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus Nov. 11.
Dr. Bobbi Barends, vice president and campus director of the Owens Campus, opened the event recognizing veterans and by thanking them for their service.
Dr. Karen Berry was the speaker for the event. Wreaths were presented to honor each branch of service and were placed underneath each plaque. The Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force were honored. Veterans students, alumni, veteran staff, and active serving veterans were called up to present each wreath.
Barbara Macfie, a veteran who served 15 years in the US Army had several duties and did many important things in her time with the service. She assisted a chaplain and helped make sure that soldiers had religious services in Saudi Arabia while they were stationed there. She also served as a soldier and was entrusted with guarding a berm at night from potential attackers.
Earl Mclowe, a veteran in the US Army during Vietnam, was a small unit commander for an infantry unit. He was a part of the 173rd Airborne. He served for 10 years in the army. His wife also served as a nurse in the Army, and his daughter served in the Air Force Reserves for 6 years.
McIowe said, “he is very proud of his service and his daughter.”
His daughter is a fulltime student in the Nursing program.
Dr. Barends said the college is laser focused on supporting students and veterans and the event is an opportunity to thank veterans and those that have served.
