Treasures of the Sea Museum grand reopening at Delaware Technical Community College

GEORGETOWN — Delaware Technical Community College held a grand reopening of the Treasures of the Sea Museum on Sept. 6.

The museum has had some controversy on who really owns the treasure which is what made the museum close down in the first place. The treasure was found on the coast of Florida, but the funding and research that led to the discovery came from Delaware.

As it currently stands, however, the museum is staying in Delaware until further notice.

The museum shows off the treasure that came from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, a shipwreck that happened in the 17th century.

The ship, Nuestra Señora de Atocha, and the sister ship known as the Santa Margarita was sailing from Cuba to Spain in 1622, transporting gold, silver, and other objects of wealth, when the ships were caught off-guard by a hurricane.

Famed treasure hunter, Mel Fisher, researcher Dr. Eugene Lyons, and Georgetown investor Melvin Joseph Sr. found the treasure on July 20, 1985.

The museum tour has a 45 minute movie about the rich history and discovery process of this $4,000,000 treasure and gives the visitors an opportunity to see the treasure first hand, with treasure ranging from jewelry to bronze cannons.

Students and faculty are excited about the grand reopening of the museum and how this reopening could even benefit the college.

Josh Norwood, a teacher from the Delaware Technical Community College, realizes that the reopening is a great opportunity for the college. “The museum is right next to the library,” Norwood mentions. “And the student service center is also really close, so people can learn more about the college itself without going far.”

“Students can learn about history,” said Reggie Ordinola, a student from Delaware Technical Community College. “Having a museum that has such interesting history can help broaden fellow students' willingness to learn more about Delaware and its culture.”

Lizzie Moyer, another student from Delaware Technical Community College mentions another byproduct of the museum reopening. “The museum can show off the great community that comes from Delaware,” Lizzie said. “Everyone worked together to find the treasure which showcases Delaware's community and willingness to help.”

The Treasure of the Sea Museum is only open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Entry fee is $5 for visitors and $3 for students, which allows everyone an opportunity to learn about an interesting part of Delaware’s culture.

The museum is located in the Stephen J. Betze Library on the Delaware Technical Community College Campus, found on Rt. 18/404 Seashore Highway, Georgetown, Delaware.
