Small Town Gaming hosted a bi-weekly event called Small Town Showdown at the Greenwood VFW Jan. 24.

The event saw a turnout of approximately 20-25 people who were all competing in a “Super Smash Brothers” Tournament. Two games in the series are featured, “Super Smash Brothers: Melee”, for Nintendo Gamecube and “Super Smash Brothers Ultimate” for Nintendo Switch.

Inside the venue, a series of tables were set up, adorned with television sets and game consoles. Players who entered the tournament were required to pay an admission fee of $12.

They also enter under a pseudonym referred to as a “tag.”

To start the tournament, the hosts assigned players to each setup and had them begin their matches. Each match consists of a best of 3 set of games with three lives per player, until the grand finals, which is a match consisting of minimum two sets, each best of three with the same amount of lives. The Grand Finals was also streamed live on Twitch as well.

Tim Snider, a regular competitor and frequent collaborator with the company said the environment was staunchly competitive during the tournament bracket, however, once one has been eliminated from the competition, winding down is easy.

Zachi Prattis, another contender, added that the general atmosphere is a friendly one, despite occasional noise complaints from other attendees.

“It's run good, the brackets are efficient and run through rather quickly, at least compared to [other tournaments],” said Aaron Kester, another frequent competitor and former STG brand ambassador.
