God’s Table: serving the community, one hot meal at a time

God’s Table at Centenary United Methodist Church in Laurel, is serving hot, home cooked meals every Friday at 6 p.m. through October to April.

God’s Table is Centenary’s seasonal ministry that partners with local churches to provide dinner and a short sermon to families and individuals in the community.

On Nov. 15, members of the ladies’ fellowship team at Laurel Nazarene Church signed up to serve soup, salad, and dessert. The servers included Melody Davis, Linda Lecates, Joanne Mitchell, Joyce Dukes, and Freddy Jester.

“There are a lot of families in this community who are in need, especially in this economy,” said Davis, who spoke and shared scripture at the event. “This is not only an opportunity to feed the people’s bodies, but their spirits as well.”

Over 20 residents were present at God’s Table, with 80% of the attendees being made up of three separate families. Many who eat at the events are looking to save money or give their family a hot meal.

Linda Lecates, who has been volunteering at the event for the past decade, wants the people at God’s Table to realize that there are organizations and a community of people who care and want to help them succeed.

Through God’s Table, Freddy Jester believes that volunteers can help those who attend feel good by providing food and sharing the Bible in the same manner that Jesus did.

“When you get to know people and they start talking to you, it can touch their heart and make them want to do better,” said Jester when speaking about finding more volunteers for the dinners.
