Delaware Technical Community College’s Owens Campus hosted a Volunteer Day at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore in Lewes on Feb. 7.
The event was an opportunity for students and faculty at Delaware Tech to help out at ReStore, a nonprofit thrift store whose proceeds support Habitat for Humanity’s mission.
Becky, a ReStore employee who did not want to use her last name, said “We are helping keep things out of the landfill and we are helping to contribute to the finances of building homes for people that need them.”
ReStore accepts donations of furniture, bathroom, kitchen, and lighting fixtures, do-it-yourself tools, home decor, toys and games, books, and more.
Habitat for Humanity International opened its Sussex County branch in 1991, and employees described their longstanding affiliation with the nonprofit.
“During the Covid years I didn’t come in. (I’ve worked at ReStore) probably eight years in total,” said Naida, a ReStore employee.
The volunteer day was organized by Amy Russell, student affairs program assistant and international education coordinator at Delaware Tech.
“We try to do it twice a year, with a (house) build in the fall and typically in February we try to do a ReStore day,” said Russell, who also volunteers at Delaware Tech’s food bank.
Delaware Tech students whose majors require service hours can complete most or all of their volunteering in one day at ReStore.
Usually more students volunteer for builds than ReStore days, said Russell.
Volunteers at ReStore assist with cleaning, taking inventory, and stocking shelves with new donations. They are invited to shop at ReStore after volunteering.
A fall Habitat for Humanity build volunteer day is to be scheduled by Delaware Tech.
