Arts and craft at Laurel Public Library is an activity that happens once a month for the adults in the community to come together and create crafts for free, with all materials provided.
The activity was on Feb. 10, and there were around 20 attendees. The Activity was a “shadow box garden swing”. In this activity people had to paint the wooden pallets and use glue to put the design together.
There were written and oral instructions provided. There was barely any confusion on what to do and most of the people knew what to do.
The organizer and instructor for this event was the Adult Services Librarian Kristen Chelmow, organizer and instructor, said the library has hosted this event since December 2021.
“I kept this program going because it consistently brings in 15 to 20 people…and the people are so happy when it is all over that it makes it worth it.”
Chelmow said the most challenging part about this program for her is coming up with a craft that has available materials, is price friendly, and easy for the people to follow.
Chelmow said she likes to find a balance for her crafters, carefully selecting designs that are challenging, yet easy-to-follow, so that all skill levels can participate.. She also always wants this activity to be for adults to have their own time making something that is easy and relaxing, so she does a lot of research.
Mary Soderholm, said she has been going to the library for about three and half years and enjoys going to this craft event.
“It gets me out of the house, I like to do the little crafts and I get to meet some friends.” Soderholm said.
Chelmow wants to give adults a space for themselves and for them to have the opportunity to create connections and friendships.
The next arts and craft event will be on March 10 at 11:30 a.m, and it will be a painted bird house.
