The Jack F. Owens campus recently crowned new officers to the Student Government Association for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year.

This is President Samuel R. Schlegel II’s first official role in a leadership position. He chose to get involved with SGA for when he transfers to University of Pennsylvania.

“I thought SGA would be a great opportunity to learn leadership skills and continue them at the next school,” Schlegel said.

Secretary Amanda Greenstein is also excited to have this as her first official leadership role. She hopes for personal growth within the role and to help better the school to make it more inviting.

“I want to make it a better place for everyone and to make it as welcoming as possible,” Greenstein said.

On the other hand, vice president Marquetta Nelson has had experience being a leader. She was the founder and first president of the Creative Writing Club on campus. Nelson said advisor Dr. Berry encouraged her to run for office and she hopes to encourage others to get more involved at the school.

“I want to promote communication between everybody,” Nelson said. “Student to student, student to faculty, and even faculty to faculty.”

Treasurer Tina Huebner has had much experience in the Student Life leader role. Huebner first got involved with the Campus Activities Board when it first started but knew there was more for her to do.

“It was a lot of fun but I felt it wasn’t really where my place was, I’m a behind the scenes kind of person,” Huebner said.

Huebner then got involved with SGA, taking the president position and continued helping with many school event, such as the 5K held on campus where she was the co-chair.

Huebner hopes to be the liaison between the students and administration.

“I want open communication between the administration and students,” Huebner said. “I feel like sometimes there’s a disconnect and I want to be there for students if they have anything they need help with."

Dr. Denise Berry has been the advisor for the SGA along with CAB ever since she started at the school in June of 2013. Dr. Berry hopes for SGA are to have a better relationship with not only CAB, since they work closely together, but with the school body as well.

“My goal is for SGA and CAB to work to together and I want students to know who the SGA officers are," Berry said. "I want [SGA] being the voice for students, having more of a presence on campus."
