Sporting events held on Owens Campus

By Jo Sheldon

Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus is made up of limited sports programs.

Owens Campus currently offers three sports; golf, baseball, and softball. To some students those three sports are very important, but to others they think it is unfair.

Curtis Brock, athletic director said there used to be someone paid on campus to expose the sporting events, but they left and never came back.

“The marketing department is putting something together to help with the exposure for next year,” Brock said.

Brock said the low budget on campus is the main reason for only offering three sports.

“It is up to the campus director to allow another sport,” Brock said. “It would most likely be female soccer.”

Britteny Alexander, vet tech major, believes the campus should offer other sports available to everyone.

“I only knew we had a baseball team,” Alexander said. “And that is only because I park near their practice field.”

Alexander said Owens campus should offer other sports such as soccer and volleyball since both of those sports can be played as coed or separate.

“I think that having other sports offered on campus would make the campus life more interesting and fun,” Alexander said.

Summer Morse, a nursing student, loves sports and anything to do with the idea of having extra curricular activities on campus.

Morse said she has never been to a game on campus because it is hard to find a schedule.

“It would be nice if they put together a web page for activities for students and include all sporting event schedules,” Morse said.

Thomas Butterly, golf assistant coach, said he stays connected with the sporting events because he is a coach.

Butterly stated that make the sporting events more known to students, a schedule should be posted on monitors throughout the hallways to capture more attention.

“We are currently trying to make a website to help get golfing information out to the campus,” Butterly said.

Zach Jenney, physical therapist major and member of the golf team, agreed that the sports programs to not have more schedules posted on campus.

“I’ve never played golf until this year and there are probably people who have played in high school that have no idea the sport exists on campus,” said Jenney. “The only reason I found out was when a teacher of mine mentioned it.”

Jenney said it is hard to find people to participate in sports programs when they are not announced.

“Once they find out, it is usually too late, and that hurts the sports teams and the students,” Jenney said.
