SNA give back to community and fundraises for self

By Brian Eastburn

Delaware Technical Community College Student Nurses Association (SNA) gave back to the community by running a canned goods drive for Horizon House and they also donated baked goods to the Crisis House in Georgetown, and all this happened while they were holding a bake sale for their national conference, which is held in April in Tennessee

The Horizon House, founded in 1952 by a group of Quakers, performs many services to deal with the needs of adults with drug or alcohol addiction, developmental disabilities or are homeless. The Horizon House tries to give the person a safe place to live, build their self-esteem, help with communication skills and help achieve an education or a job.

“The Horizon House provides case management for patients who have chronic mental health issues,” said nursing instructor Maggie Fleetwood. “The can drive is just one way we can help.”

The SNA bake sale became another way the SNA helped out the community as they took what wasn't sold and donated it to the Crisis House in Georgetown.

“We wanted to earn a little money,” said SNA Advisor Nikki Hazel. “But we had enough food left over to donate to the Crisis House.”

The Crisis House was founded in 1981 as an emergency shelter for homeless men, women and children. The requirements to be admitted to the Crisis House are:

●     Homeless

●     Be free of drugs and alcohol while at the shelter

●     Heads of households are 18 years or older

●     Not already served within the last 12 months

●     Must complete a background check at the Georgetown Police Department and be free of any outstanding warrants and any sexual or violent offenses

As future nurses they are being trained to help people in need and even while fundraising their training went into effect as they gave back to people that truly needed it.
