Career Services open house prepares students for Job Fair
A Career Services Open House was held on March 19 at Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus in the Jason Technology Center. Students received guidance for the next steps after college at this event as well as preparation for the campus job fair.
“The goal was to catch students going by because sometimes people forget about career services...so just being here is enough to let students know that we exist and that we can offer some assistance,” said Career Counselor Deneice Berry, who organized the event.
The main purpose of the Career Services Open House was to prepare students for the Job Fair on March 27 at the gymnasium inside the JTC building.
“This is a career preparation [and] a resume review for students getting them prepared for our upcoming job fair,” Berry said. “We thought it would be best to set a table out, let students know about the services that we offer, but also let them know the proper dress for a job fair, make sure they know what questions to ask, [and] that they have a good working resume.”
Many students stopped by to speak with Berry about the job fair.
One student was Jose Ascencio, who is in the Food Safety program, and was interested in receiving a mock interview and feedback on his resume. Ascencio also spoke about his current status at Delaware Tech.
“This is our last semester here and my plan is to look for work experience because in this field, you can work with an associates degree. I want to build my resume to have some kind of management experience, or just experience in the industry,” Ascencio said. “What I’m looking for is working for some kind of food inspecting agency like USDA, FDA, or anything like that, [where] I can put what I learned here to work.”
Another student in attendance was Meir Morales, another Food Safety major, who was interested in finding out what to expect at the job fair.
“I heard that a job fair will be happening here soon on campus and I was curious to see what employers were going to show up and how the job fair works,” said Morales.
When asked how the job fair might help him in the future Morales said, “The networking that one can achieve by surrounding themselves [with] so many different companies is enormous compared to applying to one place at a time. Job fairs are one of the most key methods [by which] somebody can actually find a job.”
