Education Club hosts 11th Annual Book Fair

The Education Club at Delaware Technical Community College offered Scholastic books and school supplies for everyone during the 11th annual Scholastic Book Fair at Lighthouse Cove in the Owens Campus on Oct. 2-3.

The Education Club has had numerous advisors and has 25 active members. The club is open to education students and any student with a related field of study. Club members get together for activities and events throughout the year, coordinating through email, class announcements, and fliers.

The purpose of the club is for education students to gain opportunities and information about their field, have experiences in their field, and to gain support in education throughout the community and the college.

Scholastic books available at the event ranged from infant board books through adult best-selling novels. The book fair gives members and attendees knowledge of books for different age brackets that they will be using when they head into the workforce.

Holly Hearmstead is one of the advisors of the Education Club. She also teaches multiple education classes at the Owens Campus. Hearmstead said students are required during each course to go into the community for observation hours.

“We are able to use some of the fundraising from the book fair to have those students go out with a thank you book for the teacher they did their field observations with,” said Hearmstead.

Proceeds from the book fair are earned in Scholastic Dollars. The Scholastic Dollars are used to order educational materials supporting the Early Childhood Development Center, the campus lab school where education students gain classroom experience.
