Dewey Beach hosts 8th annual Dewey Goes Pink

Dewey Goes Pink has raised close to $400,000 in the first seven years of operation. Dewey Beach hosted the 8th Annual Dewey Goes Pink 5K run and 1.5 mile walk on Oct. 6 to support the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.

Josie Nixon, 22, said she is returning to the event for a second year.

“I live in Dewey throughout the summer, so people talk about this the whole year and I’m really excited for it,” she said.

Nixon said her reasons to run are more than just physical fitness, she is no stranger to knowing someone with cancer.

“I’ve had multiple family members with breast cancer and just regular cancer and it means a lot to me,” said Nixon.

Starboard owners Steve "Monty" Montgomery and Adam Howard started Dewey Goes Pink in memory and honor of their mothers. Montgomery lost his mother after a 25-year battle and Howard’s mother is currently a survivor.

Sophia Gingerich, 22, was participating in the race for the first time.

“Participating in this event to me means that we’re bringing awareness to breast cancer and we’re raising money for breast cancer,” said Gingerich.

Gingerich’s mother, Karen, 55, was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago.

“She already went through chemo, and she just finished radiation and she is about to have her second surgery in November,” she said.

Mary Thomas said she was racing for her best friend.

“I’m racing for Karen Gingerich, Sophia’s mother, my best friend,” she said, “and Natalie Craig’s mom, her name is Alice Craig. She was just diagnosed last month.”
