Run, White and Blue 5k at Delaware Tech

The Fourth Annual Run, White and Blue 5k was held on Sept. 6 at the Jack F. Owens Delaware Technical Community College Campus, where supporters for the day’s charity event came out to donate what they could to the cause.

Delaware Tech President Dr. Mark Brainard said the money raised during the event helps students.

“Every campus has a 5k that raises money for different needs for each campus and obviously the Owens campus’ Run, White and Blue has always benefitted Veteran Scholarships, so this event has always generated a lot of interest,” said Dr. Brainard.

Patriots Day supporters from all over Sussex county participated in this year’s fourth annual 5k run. Money from registered participants goes to the Veteran/ First Responders scholarship. The event raised close to $24,000 for these scholarship funds.

Top Sponsors, who were under the title of a hero, include WBOC-TV and Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge.

The 5k run also was complemented with several food caterers., JD Shuckers and Pizza King, as well as Mission BBQ out of Dover provided food for all the attendees and runners.

The National Guard, WBOC, and Georgetown EMS all had their own stations set up to reach out to people at the 5k. Michael Hastings, Sergeant First Class Senior Recruiting in the Retention NCO in the Delaware National Guard was at the event with a few of his recruits.

Hastings said, “We are doing a 5k today in support of a Military organization we are here today in support of that and because we were told to be here.”

Many people got to test their pull up skills on the pull up bar that was brought by the National Guard.

In the end the one who came out on top was Austin Cave out of Delmar. Finishing the 5k in only a little over 16 minutes.
