Owens Campus hosts Veterans Day breakfast

Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus hosted a Veterans Day breakfast on Nov. 9 in the Carter Partnership Building to honor the men and women of the Armed Forces.

The event opened with a Presentation of the Colors by Sussex Central High School JROTC, followed by the “National Anthem” sung by Owens Campus Financial Aid Specialist Lakedia Johnson.

Sherri Martz said she came to the breakfast because her husband is a 20-year veteran. Martz said that she and her husband also attended the previous year.

“Last year they celebrated the 25-year anniversary of Desert Storm, and my husband is a veteran from Desert Storm,” said Martz.

Breakfast was served buffet style with food provided by The Lighthouse Cove.

The Lighthouse Cove Caterer Dawn Lewis said, "I think it’s important to honor veterans every day, not just today or at the breakfast.”

One feature at the event was the POW/MIA table. The table was set for one to honor all prisoners of war and missing in action soldiers. Decorating the table was a variety of objects which all symbolize the memory of these soldiers, including a single red rose symbolizing the veterans’ families and loved ones, and salt on the bread plate symbolizing the tears of the family as they wait. During the breakfast, the meaning of each object was read aloud, along with a moment of silence in remembrance.

Veterans of Foreign Wars State Chaplain Rev. Dr. Harold Mullins said the POW/MIA table was his favorite part of the breakfast.

“We set one up every Memorial Day and every Veterans Day at the (VFW) Post. Some posts have them set up all the time,” said Mullins.

This year’s breakfast was one of several Veterans Day events held at Delaware Tech.
