Owens Campus hosts its 5th Annual International Education Photo Contest

Delaware Technical Community College held its fifth annual International Education Photo Contest for its Global Understanding Series. The artwork presented came from Study Abroad students who have taken pictures all across the world.

Students and faculty who have studied abroad had the chance to submit their photos, and be entered to win a free study abroad trip.

Randy Miller, a General Business and Business Management student, was one of the photographers behind the Study Abroad photos submitted. Miller enjoys studying abroad, and he will be taking his fifth Study Abroad trip this summer.

“I enjoy learning about the business side of it, and learning the imports and exports,” Miller said.

Miller was the second-place winner for the photo contest. His artwork that placed was titled “Castle on the Bay” and was taken in Ireland. The first-place prize went to Rosita Yoc-Robiero who’s photo “Tian Tan Buddha” was taken in Hong Kong, and third place to Abby Fiske with her photo “Living on a Boat” taken place in Vietnam.

Amy Russell, International Education Coordinator for Owens Campus, is in charge of putting together all of the Global Understanding Series for Owens Campus. She said that she finds the photos submitted interesting.

“You don’t know what experiences people have had all the time,” she said. “They’re telling a story about what they learned, and how they learned it.”

Kimberly Burton, a Business instructor, came to the event to view her students’ photos that they’ve submitted.

“I feel international education is extremely important for students to have that global education experience,” Burton said.“Getting out of the classroom and experiencing the world is the best educational experience you can have.”

Students who attended this Global Understanding Series event and others had the opportunity to be put into the drawing for the free Study Abroad trip. The winner gets to choose which study abroad trip they would like to attend, that Delaware Tech offers. The drawing was held after the photo contest on Nov. 16.

Second Place winner Randy Miller took this photo of Dunguaire Castle on one of his five Study Abroad trips in 2014 to Galway, Ireland. Miller says that he took this photo on his iPad while classmates were stopping for chocolates.
