Give back this holiday: stuff a stocking drive

The Salvation Army stocking drive for local underprivileged families will be held at Delaware Technical Community College this December. Participants can stuff a stocking that will be provided by the Owen’s campus business department with small toys and small games to donate to the drive.

International business honor society Alpha Beta Gamma will be organizing the charity drive.

General business student and ABG member Jessica Meyer said the school-wide event is open to any student, staff or community member.

“Anyone can participate in this event, I know my parents and neighbors are donating a stocking this year,” she said.

The drop off dates for the stockings will be from Dec. 5 to 7, from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. There will be a collection table run by ABG members for stocking drop off near the bookstore in the Jason Technology building.

Participants can choose to build a stocking for children ages 4 through 7 and can choose to create a stocking for a girl or boy.

If people who wish to donate are unsure about what can and cannot be donated, the business department has a donation item suggestion list available upon request.

“To participate in this drive, just contact any Delaware Tech business advisor,” Meyers said, “They can provide more information and stockings. ABG members have been handing out flyers and stockings to fellow students as well. Collection of stockings will be by the Jason Technology Bookstore.”

Business administration student and ABG member Brandon Lewis said, “A lot of students are interested in this event because around this time of year, kids who are less fortunate have a chance to be surprised with a stocking stuffed with games or toys,” Lewis said.

Lewis has been involved in ABG for two years and feels that participating in events like this one is very rewarding and seeing everyone donate is very satisfying.

“It’s like being a secret Santa. There is an enjoyment in buying something for a kid who is less fortunate than you that you don’t know,” he said. “It feels good to buy something for someone else.”

Alpha Beta Gamma members will be wearing shirts and passing out stockings for people who wish to participate. Stop any ABG member or business advisor if you have any questions.
