Collegiate FFA and students clean up Vaughn Road

The Delaware Tech Collegiate FFA and Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus students teamed up on Oct. 19 to clean up trash on Vaughn Road near campus.

Students and staff from Owens Campus geared up in neon vests, grabbed trash bags and got to work cleaning up the local environment.

Volunteer Ken Gourley, Agricultural Production student, said he helps out many causes because he sees it as the right thing to do. Gourley volunteers at many places, but it was his first time volunteering for the Delaware Tech Collegiate FFA trash pickup-day.

He is currently studying organic farming so that he can make safe and pesticide-free vegetables for those without a lot of food.

“I just want to help out,” said Gourley. “I think it’s a great thing we’re doing this; look at how much trash we’ve picked up.”

“Who’s going to do it if we don’t step up?,” he said.

There was a total of 18 bags worth of trash collected by about 15 volunteers on the outskirts of Vaughn Road near Owens Campus.

James Staton, a Delaware Tech Collegiate FFA Officer and third-year Agriculture student, was also volunteering.

“I volunteered just to get the trash up, and to do something great for the community and to benefit us,” said Staton.

“We chose Vaughn Road because it was one of the closest roads to the school.”

Horticulture student and FFA Officer, Jessica Ennis was also helping clean up the roads.

“I think it helps a lot,” said Ennis. “It’s definitely a lot easier when there’s a lot of people volunteering.”

After cleaning up the roads, all volunteers were rewarded with a pizza party in The Agricultural Education Building.

FFA adopt a highway is a semiannual event hosted by the The Delaware Tech Collegiate FFA.

There are many events open to students and the public alike. For more information and updates for upcoming community events check out the Delaware Tech Collegiate FFA Facebook Page.
