Global Understanding Series showcases Hispanic Heritage trips
The Global Understand Series partnered with the Hispanic Heritage Series at Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus to introduce students to new Study Abroad experiences on Sept. 26 in the theatre of the Arts and Sciences building.
The Global Understand Series is a series of workshops, presentations and events that provide a personal perspective on global issues, region, culture, or people.
During the Hispanic Heritage Event, speakers Ann Gioia and Jen Adams from the Terry Campus Nursing Department shared their experiences with Hispanic heritage and discussed last year’s healthcare-focused Study Abroad trip to Guatemala. Outside of the theater was information about Hispanic Heritage and chips and guacamole to represent the country.
The next healthcare focused study abroad trip will be to the Dominican Republic in Spring 2018 during spring break from March 21 to April 7 to accommodate nursing students who are participating in an accelerated program starting in May.
For nurses in the RN to BSN program, taking part in the study abroad health trip counts as one course elective. It is required that all study abroad trip students take a semester-long class where they will be given 3 credits.
While this trip to the Dominican Republic has many health care aspects, students of all majors are welcome to register and attend.
“It’s definitely healthcare focused, but not exclusive to nursing. I think it’s a great fit with Human Services and even Communications because a lot of what we dealt with was communication issues,” said Adams.
There is a seat limit of 14 and spots are still available. Interested students should register with Amy Russell and submit a $200 deposit as soon as possible. To apply for any of the trips, follow application steps shown here.
Anyone interested will go through an interview process to answer simple questions and go over the details of the trip. The total cost of travel expenses for a Study Abroad trip ranges from around $2,500 to $3,500..
There are campus scholarships available for this trip as well as one presidential scholarship at each campus. Financial aid is also an option for eligible students.
There are a total of six Study Abroad trips taking place this school year in both the Spring and Summer.
About 30 to 40 students typically attend these scheduled events.
“We have a lot of classes that schedule [our events] in… and luckily we have some student interest, including a couple of people who are going into nursing and so they do want to go to the Dominican Republic,” said organizer Amy Russell.
Gioia likes the benefits that Delaware Tech offers.
“I think it’s amazing because I’ve never worked at a community college that offers study abroad so I think that it is a great opportunity,” said Gioia.
