Spring Fest 2017 held at Owens Campus

Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus held its annual Spring Fest on March 9 in the Fireside Lounge for school organizations to come together and spread awareness of campus activities and score some new recruits.

Spring Fest included a virtual reality demonstration where students got the chance to put on a pair of virtual reality goggles and submerge themselves in worlds where they can shoot aliens or fly ships or even walk on balance beams between skyscrapers.

Surrounding the virtual reality demo were tables set up from different groups, all with its own activity or flyers with information. Groups included: Student Paralegal Association, Veterans Inspiring Progress, The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Vanguard Society, and the Performing Arts Club.

Erika Chandler worked the booth from the Education Club which had a Cornhole game set up. Participants who made three or more bean bags into the hole had the chance to win a novel.

“We (Education Club) try to organize an event at least once or twice a month, “ Chandler said.

She said she felt this event had a good turnout and was able to grab the attention of students.

Sherri Martz handed out clips and flyers representing the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

“Just one walk through this event will leave you with your hands full of SWAG, and free pizza,” said Martz. “We come to events and spread the word about what we do,” Martz said, “this is a pretty good turn out.”

The turnout for the event was very big, throughout the time of the event the entire Fireside lounge was packed, full of people squeezing past each other to get free pizza or sing some karaoke. It was a very happy feeling environment with smiles on many faces.

Spring Fest was part of Delaware Tech’s Halfway There Week, which held an event every day of the week. Other events included Advising Month, Returned to Learn, a scavenger hunt and drug awareness, and ending with a trip to Philadelphia.
