Global Skills: Travel Tips
Students at the Owens Campus of Delaware Technical and Community College were presented on March 7 with a 90-minute informational interactive session about traveling abroad as part of the campus-wide Global Understanding Series.
This event was led by Dr. Heather Madden, an instructor and Study Abroad coordinator.
Dr. Madden presented websites and resources students can utilize to travel abroad without spending a lot of money.
“It really opened my eyes to a whole world where traveling abroad doesn’t have to be this big expensive journey as I once thought it was,” said attendee Christopher Palmer.
“The resources that were presented and discussed today really enhanced my desire to get out there and explore.”
During the session, students expressed some of their concerns when it comes to traveling abroad. One in particular was about the difficulty of learning the culture in foreign areas where there is a language barrier.
“In today’s world it is not hard at all; in 2017 we have so many pieces of technology now that we have the ability to effectively communicate with others no matter where we are,” Dr. Madden said.
“Aside from that, in many foreign countries, kids grow up with English being their second or third language, especially in the bigger cities, so no matter where you are that won’t be a problem at all.”
Attendee Ximena Diaz said she enjoys educating herself on new and unfamiliar regions and learning about the background and history of the place.
“I just love discovering new areas and learning about the people, and their culture,” she said. “I feel it is very beneficial for people to travel to new and uncharted areas and immerse themselves in the culture.”
