Global Understanding: Arts & Culture: Art Around the World

Delaware Technical Community College, Owens campus hosted the annual Arts & Culture: Art Around the World event on Jan. 9 at the Fireside Lounge inviting visitors to learn how to craft different art pieces from various world locations.

The event featured Japanese Origami, Celtic knot bracelets, Russian flower paintings, and Mexican paper flowers.

International Education Coordinator Amy Russell organized the event and said she hopes attendees learn about different art forms.

Russell said in the previous two years the event was held, people either spent a lot of time on one craft, or they walked around and tried every craft for a brief amount of time.

“This year it was a lot easier to set up than the previous two years. The first time it was hard, but this year I have more material from last year to use,” said Russell.

She said she feels it gets better every year because she uses what was well received from previous years while also introducing plenty of new activities.

Louise Whale, a communications major, said she enjoyed the event.

“I just came to pass time and relax. I like to use art as an escape,” said Whale.

Whale said she is interested in many forms of art and she was looking forward to this event after seeing fliers around the school.

Evelns Charles, an engineering major, also learned of the event from fliers around school. He practiced his engineering skills making origami , a Japanese-based paper-folding art form.
