Student Government Association and Campus Activities Board look for members
Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus Student Government Association and the Campus Activities Board are seeking to provide students the opportunity to work on and participate in activities on Delaware Tech campuses that deal with student government as well as student life activities.
SGA and CAB used to be just SGA, however recently CAB was created in order to help SGA focus on student government while still having a group of students dedicated to setting up and carrying out student life activities on campus.
CAB Vice President, Helen Gress, said, “Because SGA had so many responsibilities between talking to the school about government issues and handling campus activities, CAB was created.”
Gress explained CAB is responsible for all student life activities such as: new student orientations, open houses, Halfway There Week, and the Presidential Welcome Picnic.
SGA President Jamin Adkins said, “SGA as a whole is the government and representation side of students on campus. Where CAB puts on the events, SGA represents the student body.”
Adkins also explained that SGA is made up of advisory committees which work similarly to the committees of the legislative branch in the United States government. The representatives that sit on these committees can give input taken from regular students in every area of student life such as comments about the lighthouse cove or the ease of access to resources on campus.
Adkins said, “We get students to come out and try to ascertain feedback from them, if there are any problems students have, SGA can bring that to the people above us.”
For students who are interested in joining SGA or CAB, the process involves applying with the appropriate people. Students looking to work with CAB will interview with the CAB President and Vice President, along with Dr. Berry. Students wanting to work with SGA will have to turn in applications.
SGA students also have to campaign for the seat they are looking to fill. If more than one student runs for the same position, both students will have to attempt to make the best argument for why they should be elected and at the end of the campaign time the SGA officers will be voted on by all the members of SGA.
CAB President, Michael Hoffa said, “We all work as a team, SGA and CAB work to help each other.”
Hoffa has a multitude of responsibilities as president, such as attending mandatory student life events including speaking with faculty and conferences. Hoffa has to perform those duties while also handling the regular operations of student life activities.
Hoffa was chosen for the position because even though he was not a student at Delaware Tech he had already made himself known to the student body by being active around campus while working as a sign language interpreter for deaf and hard of hearing students. Hoffa had volunteered to work with student activities during events before he had officially joined.
Hoffa said, “I was not a student but I ended getting up with the previous president and that opened the doors for me; I started at the bottom and now I am here at the top.”
SGA and CAB are open to any students that are responsible, hardworking, and dedicated and willing to volunteer their time to work on improving student life at the Delaware Tech Owens campus.
