Jamming with the Music Notes Club

Are you musically inclined, or at least love to sing in the shower? The Music Notes Club at Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus is welcoming new members and invites all musicians, singers, and even beginners to join the club.

Due to a demand from students, the Music Notes Club was rebooted this semester, resulting in a complete makeover.

Music Notes Club Advisor Erin Schutt said, “Last year there was a Music Notes, and the year before that, actually. They were more of a band. More of drums and guitar, and that kind of thing. So, it was more musician focus. And just recently, it’s become more vocal music.”

“This group is flexible. They also appreciate each other’s strengths. They appreciate and are very aware of encouragement. They are very positive with each other,” said Schutt.

She also said there is no strict rule over their creativity, such as “this is what you’re going to be doing,” but that the students are free to think, and bring to the table whatever they see is interesting.

The Music Notes Club works a lot with the community, such as singing at nursing homes, or for children, here on campus. Recently they sang at the Educational Christmas party on Dec. 5. The club will be doing Sing-a-grams fundraiser for Valentine’s Day.

Many of the members used to play instruments or sing in choir before joining. There are even some members who were in theatre, and decided this will be a good step in the right direction.

“I decided to join because I really enjoy singing, and being in a group atmosphere, so I figured, why not join?” said Brianna Sabb, president of the Music Notes Club.

During meetings, the Music Notes Club examines songs they would like to sing for upcoming events, harmonize with each other, practice playing instruments, and more.

“We don’t believe in turning people away, we believe in positive reinforcement. So, if you’re tone deaf, we will help you become less tone deaf, and/or we’re going to help you find another way to be part of our group,” said Schutt.

Club meetings are open to anyone who wishes to join, and are held on Tuesdays and Fridays. On Tuesday, the club meets in the Student Service Center, from 2 p.m. to 5p.m., and on Friday, the club meets in the theatre from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
