Study abroad fair presents travel opportunities to students

Delaware Technical Community College Owens campus hosted a Study Abroad Fair on Oct. 20 designed to educate students who are interested in taking a study abroad course or who have questions about the study abroad program.

Event coordinator Amy Russell, said “the study abroad fair is an opportunity for students to come and learn about all the programs at once.”

Russell continued “A lot of students know about study abroad vaguely, but if they are interested, this is the time to start narrowing down their options.”

During the event, instructors and students alike talked about traveling internationally and spoke about the countries of interest for each of the study abroad programs. Each table presented a small preview of each country and many provided a sample of some international foods.

Jennifer Morley, a study abroad instructor, said that “planning the course starts over a year before you ever actually travel.”

Morley continued to explain that the process for both students and instructors involves multiple proposals, an interviewing process, and gathering the information required for international travel, such as passports.

“It’s a pretty organized process,” she added

The event was held alongside the Halfway There Week event, put on by the Campus Activities Board, which offered free, professional, massages to help students de-stress going into the final half of the semester. The two events benefit from a mutual interest from students.

Delaware Tech Alumna Samantha Monroe has studied abroad before and attended the event for a potential second trip.

Monroe said, “I think these events get students thinking about studying abroad and getting motivated to do so. I believe the event was successful. A lot of students came and spoke with other students who studied abroad and met with the lead instructors.”

The study abroad program opens for students to apply Nov. 2, but also requires students to meet with the instructor that will be hosting the study abroad program that they are interested in.
