‘Star Wars - The Force Awakens’ coming to Delaware Tech April 20

Calling all Jedi ... The Student Government Association (SGA) will be hosting a “Star Wars” themed costume contest and a showing of “Star Wars -The Force Awakens” on April 20, at Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus.

The free event will be held in the Student Service Building theater, with the contest starting at 5:30 p.m. and the movie following at 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.

The idea for the contest and movie belongs to SGA President Dr. Denise Berry.

“Everybody loves ‘Star Wars,’ and when ‘[The Force Awakens]’ came out, everybody dressed up and that’s something people love,” said Dr. Berry.

“The Force Awakens” was released Dec. 18, 2015 and set the record for biggest opening day at the box office for $119.1 million. The movie currently tops the domestic grosses for all time box office results, with “Star Wars” and “Star Wars: Episode 1” also seated in the top 10.

SGA Vice President Jamin Adkins said the SGA tries to show movies students will enjoy.

“Personally, I love Star Wars, and the overall series has had a huge cultural impact,” he said. “We try to show movies that are entertaining, and this one is especially entertaining.”

The college receives permission to show movies through a licensing agency known as Swank Motion Pictures, Inc., said Dr. Berry. The company represents many of the industry's top studios and provides licensed movies to non-theatrical institutions.

The event is open to both students, staff and the community. However, community members must be accompanied by a Delaware Tech staff or student.
