Delaware Technical Community College students compete in local pageant

On Nov. 22, Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus, students competed in the Miss Georgetown and Miss Sussex County pageants.

Taylor Johnson, a communications major from Laurel, said the process of competing in the Miss Georgetown and Miss Sussex County pageant event was tough, yet fun.

Johnson said competitors must raise $100 for each local pageant entered until they’ve reached a goal of $400.

“You have to practice your talent, walking for swimsuit and evening gown and your interview,” Johnson said. “You want to practice so you can be the best you can, so that way you can win a title to continue on to compete at Miss Delaware at Dover Downs in June,” she said.

Johnson said the most difficult part of the pageants is the interviews, because she has have no idea what questions she will be asked.

“You need to be up to date on current events as well because in your private interview they will ask you anything,” she said. “You only have 10 minutes to make an impression.”

In terms of the other competitors, Johnson said each time she’s competed it’s been a different group of girls.

“It varies per pageant, but all the girls so far have been very nice,” she said.

Johnson enjoyed the Miss Georgetown and Miss Sussex County Pageant very much, and took away many memories from the event.

“My favorite memory about competing is honestly the whole stage aspect,” Johnson said. “Being on the stage is so addicting for me because I love performing.”

“I had been on a hiatus from performing since I graduated from Laurel in 2012, so I had really missed it,” Johnson continued. “Now that I'm back performing on a stage again I've been much happier, “ she said.

“Performing is my passion.”

Jenna Hitchens, another Communications major from Georgetown, Delaware, agreed with Johnson in saying the interview is the most difficult part.

“You have a platform and an interview where judges ask you questions about your platform and current events,” she said. “You never know what they’re going to ask.”

Hitchens also took away some great memories and relationships away from this competition, including winning the title of Miss Georgetown.

“My favorite part is all the girls,” Hitchens said. “My roommate at Miss Delaware and I are very close,” she said.
