Delaware Tech student awarded journalism scholarship

A Delaware Technical Community College student was awarded a journalism scholarship at the beginning of the Fall 2015 semester.

Samantha Monroe, a Communications major, was the recipient of the Fantl scholarship, awarded to her by communications advisor Rob Rector. She was awarded this scholarship for being a Communications major with a grade point average that fit the criteria for the scholarship.

Monroe came across the scholarship while looking at the scholarship postings on the Delaware Tech website, searching for another way to help pay for college.

"Being a stay-at-home mom and not being able to come up with the money to go to school was really difficult,” Monroe said.

Her interest in the scholarship was especially sparked when she saw it was a journalism scholarship.

“Since I’m going into journalism, that’s what intrigued me about it,” Monroe said. “It was a scholarship made for journalism and Communications students.”

Upon receiving the scholarship, Monroe said she was excited.

“I’ve never actually gotten a scholarship before,” Monroe said. “Because of not having much money to pay for school, receiving this scholarship was truly a sigh of relief.”

Delaware Tech Senior Financial Aid Specialist Jan Tidwell, is in support of scholarships like the one presented to Monroe.

“I think it is important to have scholarships for particular programs here at the college,” Tidwell said. “Having these kinds of scholarships can specifically benefit students in these programs,” she said.

However, Tidwell feels students don’t take advantage of the scholarship opportunities to the best of their advantage.

“A lot of times we have to go out and get students to apply for the scholarships,” she said. “It’d be nice if when students applied to the college they’d also apply for some of the scholarships as well, because it’s definitely an advantage."

“I am thankful for scholarships such as this for our students,” Rector said. “I know a lot of times students can face mounting debt between college costs, transportation, and book costs,” he continued. “To at least have an opportunities to take the edge off financially for students is a great advantage.”

Students can apply for scholarships by going to the Delaware Tech website to the “Financial Aid and Scholarships” page under “Admissions and Financial Aid” to view scholarships and further directions on how to apply.
