Books of all kinds were sold during the Scholastic Book Fair, hosted by the Education Club at Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus in the dining hall on Nov. 10-12.

The Scholastic Book Fair had a lot of books for reading levels and ages including old, updated children's book classics along with latest releases.

Education Instructor and Education Club adviser Bob Kime has worked at Delaware Tech Owens Campus for three years, and has been an advisor of the club for two years. Before working at Delaware Tech, Kime worked in the Milford School District for 15 years.

The Education Club has hosted the book-fair for years and even took part in other events such as the Polar Bear Plunge.

Kime said the club is primarily for students who are majoring in education. He said the Scholastic Book Fair is a traditional event on campus, and that book-giving makes a great Christmas gift.

“It's a great way to Christmas shop or give a present like a book rather than toys, toys, toys,” he added.

Kime said the proceeds go to the club which, in turn, goes into the community. He added that education students doing observation hours at elementary schools are required to buy a book to give to the teacher they observed as a thank you present.

“What we raise from this book fair we buy books and take them to the classrooms we observe,” he said.

Elementary Education major Blair Rogers is a member of the Education Club and in her second-to-last semester of college.

Rogers said she joined the club because it was something she knew she wanted to do.

“Once I actually went that direction, I've not been happier,” she added.

Rogers said that being in the club helps get her get her foot in the door, the opportunity to go to different school districts and gain good references.

“It's just a close group of people that you're going to end up at some point working with,” she added. “So it gives you an opportunity to meet people and market yourself.”

Rogers said students who join the club have a good way of making new friends who will cross paths throughout their career.

“If you like family and you like getting connections, then it's the place to be,” she added.

Elementary Education major Melinda “Lindie” Joachimowski is a second-year student who attended the event after word-of-mouth from her advisor and students in her class that participated in the Education Club.

Joachimowski said she attended the event because of the updated children's books that would be great for a personal library when she becomes a teacher in the near future.

Joachimowski said students and faculty should come to the Scholastic Book Fair because of the many variety of books and that their not expensive.

“Their very up-to-date and very age appropriate,” she added. “There's different activities that they have there like necklace beading, and different things to spark interest in children as well as adults.”
