To celebrate and encourage faculty-student relations, Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus, hosted a Faculty/Staff Appreciation Event in the Student Services Center on Nov. 18.
The event was held by Campus Activities Board and Collegiate FFA in collaboration with Music Notes Club and featured an open mic performance in the Dining Hall.
Cory Dunt, advisor for the Music Notes Club, said Music Notes normally presents Open Mic every third Wednesday of the month at Java 101. However, they decided to perform at the appreciation event to entertain the guests and attract new club members.
Visitors had a chance to write thank you notes to college faculty and staff while enjoying free coffee and desserts.
Jessica Ennis, one of the students helping with hosting, said she had participated in the college events before, but this one turned out better than she expected because of the live music.
“The purpose of this event is to show appreciation to college staff and faculty members for everything they do,” Ennis said.
As a part of the event, students, faculty, and staff took the stage to give speeches and perform for the guests.
Adam Smith, communications student, was invited by Dr. Denise Berry, advisor for the Campus Activities Board, as one of the speakers.
In addition to his speech, Smith said, “I really appreciate what the faculty members have done for me. The instructors I’ve met were more than just teachers; they were my mentors and role models.”
Lakedia Johnson from the Financial Aid office took the stage to sing live. Her performance was a success mentioned on Owens Campus Facebook page.
Michelle Keenan, English instructor, said she had attended every one of the appreciation events since she started teaching at Delaware Tech in 2010.
Keenan said the appreciation events are to enforce connections between students and teachers, and to give faculty members an opportunity to communicate and exchange their experience.
“It’s important to celebrate our students, and when they have time to celebrate us, I want to be there,” Keenan said. “Events like this help us to learn what students appreciate so we can win their hearts and improve the learning process.”
