An excursion to Vietnam is in the works, with members and advisors of the Study Abroad Club meeting on Oct. 27 to discuss the semantics of the 2016 Spring semester trip.
The 12-day trip will take place from March 24, 2016 - April 4, 2016. The school will be teaming with Brittany’s Hope Foundation to work with Vietnamese orphanages during the program.
Study Abroad Club advisor Amy Russell spoke to clear up why the trip is based on these visits to the orphanages.
“The trip will focus on service learning,” Russell said, in regards to the choice to partner with Brittany’s Hope Foundation. “There are all kinds of different ways to experience a country, so in this case students will be learning through helping.”
Russell also hopes that through the program, students will gain an appreciation for other cultures and countries.
“We are always hopeful that students will come back with a life-changing memory,” Russell said.
President of the Study Abroad Club Timothy Willis was surprised in the choice of Vietnam as the Spring semester’s trip, one of a few programs chosen and offered by the committee that oversees the program for the upcoming semesters.
“I never really considered it an option.” Willis said, but added that he is looking forward to the trip, and the chance to talk to others about it.
“I like to talk to other people about their experiences in these other countries,” Willis said, “because I genuinely like discussing other countries and cultures.”
Randy Miller, Marketing and Public Relations Officer of the Owens Campus, has taken three Study Abroad trips -to Scotland, England and Ireland- during his time at Delaware Tech. He works with the Global Understanding program as a speaker to students who consider going on these trips, sharing his experiences. He promotes the idea of using the Study Abroad programs to further their careers.
“The Study Abroad program is a great way for students to link their careers with the world abroad,” Miller said. “We’re trying to get the message out that the programs aren’t just for fun, but for future gain as well.”
Upcoming meetings on Vietnam are open to anyone who wishes to learn more about the Study Abroad program. These meetings will take place on Feb. 3, 2016, Feb. 24, 2016, and March 16, 2016.
Sign-ups for the trip are still available. Students can download the course application at https://www.dtcc.edu/sites/default/files/vietnam-application-2016.pdf. There is also a Cultural Immersion credited class you must take in order to go on the trip. For more information on this class, contact Amy Russell at amy.russell@dtcc.edu.
