Student Government Association holds first meeting

By Grace Hetfield

This year’s new Student Government Association (SGA) officers President Sam Schlegel, Vice President Marquetta Nelson, Secretary Amanda Greenstein and Treasurer Tina Huebner, were introduced to student representatives and advisors from various campus organizations at the semester’s first SGA meeting on Sept. 14.

Clubs represented included the Campus Activity Board (CAB), the Medical Assistant Laboratory Technician Association (MALTA), the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), the Hispanic Culture Club, the Performing Arts Club, the Deaf Culture Club and the Automotive East Coast Performance Club.

SGA oversees the activities of all student clubs and organizations. President Schlegel lead the meeting discussing different campus events including Hispanic Heritage Month, the fashion show and monthly movie nights. Meeting attendees brainstormed ideas to encourage student participation and make events more fun.

Itzel “Izzy” Hernandez, president of the Hispanic Culture Club, said “(SGA) helps me figure out who would be interested in volunteering or becoming a member,”

In the open forum section, meeting attendees brought up pertinent topics like responsible social media usage for clubs and how students can alert the faculty to their concerns through SGA. In addition to meetings like this one, Schlegel attends administration meetings where he represents Delaware Tech students.

Amanda Greenstein believes this is an important feature of the SGA.

“Our responsibilities are to ensure that student’s voices aren’t lost in the sea of noise,” said Greenstein.

Students who have concerns can email the president at sschegl1@dtcc.edu or visit the SGA office across from Java 101 in the Student Services Center.

“I was just happy to meet all of the other club members,” said Schlegel on the meeting

“I feel like I got a glimpse of the bigger picture of what all is happening at the school.
