Have you ever been outside of your state, the country, or the continent?

Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus, Study Abroad Club invited students to join various trips to different countries during the Study Abroad Fair held Oct. 22 in the Student Services Center.

Visitors had a chance to learn about upcoming travel destinations and to meet instructors and students who have traveled abroad to find out how the programs work. Informative brochures were handed out and event staff presented information on multiple scholarships available to qualifying students to help fund their travels.

Dr. Heather Madden, faculty leader of the trip to France 2016, said traveling with Study Abroad is a life-changing experience giving students a special perspective on the world beyond their life in the USA.

“There is no better way to learn about another country's people, language, history, economy, art and politics,” Dr. Madden said. “Students studying abroad are enriched academically and personally and find later that four-year universities and employers look favorably on those who have enhanced their perspective by studying overseas.”

Rosa Pineda, an ESL student, came to learn about the Study Abroad trips available in 2016. After talking to staff and other visitors, she decided to join the trip to France next summer.

“I think this program is simply awesome,” Pineda said. “It’s a great chance for the students to see the world.”

Ingrid Estrada, nursing student, said she attended the fair because she had never been outside of the USA and had always dreamed about traveling abroad.

“I can’t wait to learn about these great opportunities and join one of the programs. I think I want to go to Peru or France next year,” Estrada said.

Students also learned how to turn the study abroad experience into cross-cultural skills beneficial to their resumes.

Dr. Madden said Study Abroad is not only a positive educational and personal experience, but also a great asset for the students’ future employment.

“Employers are increasingly looking for employees who are cross-culturally competent. Study Abroad is one of the best ways students can acquire the required global skills,” Dr. Madden said.
