The International Club, the Hispanic Culture Club, and the Hispanic Heritage Committee came together to host a Hispanic Culture Jeopardy event for Hispanic Heritage Month in the Dining Hall on Oct. 12.

Students were offered gift cards to the Tanger Outlets worth $100, $50, and $25 for first, second, and third place, respectively.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide, with an official government website and other community-run websites dedicated to the spread of familiarity with Hispanic heritage.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor Carey McDaniel, one of the coordinators of the event, said the game was originally used by the ESL teachers for things like language development for ESL students, but likes the idea of using the format to get both international students and regular students together.

“Anything we can do to encourage students to cross cultural boundaries to learn about each other is a good thing,” McDaniel said.

The MC of the game, Department Chair of ESL and Spanish Dr. Cindy Mitchell, is preparing to review all the events done for this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month in consideration for next year’s festivities.

“I think we’ll evaluate all of the events at the end of Hispanic Heritage Month,” Dr. Mitchell said. The language department will sit down and look at everything we did and see what worked and what didn’t.”

Maggie Martinez, the overall winner of first place and the $100 Tanger Outlets gift card, was excited after the event was over. Martinez (second from right, second group photo) hadn’t known there was a prize offered when she volunteered to participate in the game.

“I thought it was just a game for fun,” Martinez said. “I didn’t think I was going to win anything.”
