Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus, hosted a Bra Decorating Competition Oct. 5-7 in the Fireside Lounge, in a creative, interactive way to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The event, now in its second year, was part of a series of campus-wide Wellness Programs designed to promote student wellness in many different areas. A $20 campus bookstore gift card was offered to the first prize student winner and faculty members could win a free drink from Java 101.

Voters were encouraged to donate $.25 per vote, as well as to purchase pink T-shirts for $12 to support the cause.

Those who bought a shirt were also asked to join a group photograph on Oct. 19 at 11:45 a.m. in the Dining Hall of the Student Services Center.

Owens Campus’ Student Affairs Program Assistant Courtney Powell, who coordinated the event with Academic Counselor Sherri Niblett, said she finds the competition a great way to get students to participate in acts of charity.

“I think the event touches a lot of people,” Powell said. “It really gets students and faculty interested in charitable activities.”

International Education Coordinator Amy Russell, an advisor for the Study Abroad Club helped their treasurer Cheyenne Wood construct her entrant, the Halloween bra, and was excited at the prospect of the decorating competition.

“It’s for a good cause,” Russell said. “The competition is an interesting opportunity to be creative in a different way.”

Brenda Cantrell, the administrative assistant to the Dean of Instruction at Owens Campus, was happy to participate in this year’s event after designing one last year. Mrs. Cantrell had a special reason for wanting to be involved.

“My mother is a two-time breast cancer survivor, so it kind of strikes a chord with me,” Cantrell said. “I thought that this event was a unique idea to bring awareness to breast cancer.”
