Musicians and other performers had the chance to display their talents at Third Wednesday, an open mic event held at Owens Campus on Sept. 16.

The campus’s music club, The Music Notes, presents the open mic every third Wednesday of the month at Java 101.

Music Notes advisor Cory Dunt said the events started two years ago and is not just for students, but to staff and the community who are informed about the event through word of mouth and fliers placed around the campus as well.

The open mic provides an environment for students and staff to mingle as well as a way for musicians to network, Dunt said.

“It gives students who have musical talent the ability to show it off and be supported by their peers,” Dunt said.

Music Notes President Michael Wingate said the open mic provides an inclusive environment where musicians of any skill can perform. It also provides a good platform for performers to test out songs in front of a small crowd, he added.

General Business student John Tennefoss sang and played guitar during his performance.

Tennefoss said he began performing at the open mics in order to have more experience with public performances.

The open mics provide a good outlet for performers who typically would not perform in public elsewhere, he said.

“It really gives that healthy music experience,” Tennefoss said.

The next open mic will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from noon until 1 p.m at Java 101.
