SNA holds annual chili cook-off

Delaware Technical Community College Student Nurses Association hosted its annual Chili Cook-off in the Owens Campus Student Services Center on Jan. 29 giving clubs the chance to compete against each other in the name of chili.
Clubs that participated in the cook-off were Aevidum, Education Club, Deaf Culture Club, and the Student Nurses Association.
In the end, the Deaf Culture Club was named victorious.
Ed Hall, the Deaf Culture Club advisor, was behind the winning pot. He said he doesn’t have much of a culinary background, but he does have “a passion for chili.”
The passion behind the chili came from his family holding rival chili cook-offs, Hall said. He plans on competing in the next annual cook-off and securing the title of Delaware Tech’s Chili Cook-off winner.
The entries were all anonymous while being tasted to keep the voting fair and balanced.
There was also a jalapeno-eating contest in the dining hall during the event.
Information Security student Collin Gray was one of the many students who got to taste each participants’ chili. Gray said he entered the cafeteria in hopes of purchasing his regular lunch and was surprised to find the event going on.
“It was a nice surprise seeing the event all set up today,” Gray said. “There’s a lot of interesting chilis to try.”
Student Nurses Association Vice President Ken Dorsey said the event was held to provide an activity for the students of Delaware Tech. The chili cook-off will be an annual event sponsored by the SNA.
In terms of future plans, Dorsey said, the new SNA executive board is more participatory and hoping to expand into other events for the student body.
