Delaware Tech’s Student Nurses Association bakes up a storm for Breast Cancer Awareness

Some students may have noticed the sweet treats being sold near Delaware Technical Community College’s bookstore on Oct. 27.
The Student Nurses Association put on a bake sale in order to garner profits that were divided between the association and the foundation Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Cheryl Horst, who is a SNA advisor and a member of the nursing faculty, explained the purpose of the bake sale.
“October is Breast Cancer Awareness month,” Horst said. “SNA is focused on preventative health, so we chose to do something in October for breast cancer awareness and prevention.”
Horst also stated that in April there is a Student Nurses Association conference in Phoenix and the bake sale also serves as a fundraiser to allow more students to attend. She said that the current budget only covers four students and one advisor to attend.
Student Nurses Association President Robert Karpin was also on hand to give more insight on SNA.
“SNA is a collective group of students in and some not in the nursing program,” Karpin said. “As an association, we get together and try to figure what to do as a club and how to help our community.”
Joe Henderson is the Public Relations Officer for SNA, and he participated as well with the bake sale.
“My job is to work on fundraisers, programs, contact local charities, and to locate service projects for the SNA,” Henderson said. “The bake sale has been very successful and we have had a great turnout.”
Henderson also said that 5 percent of the bake sale proceeds and any extra donations will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, while the rest will be collected for the SNA fundraiser.
