Loyalty discount card proceeds to benefit Delaware Tech students

By Garrett Whaley

Delaware Technical Community College, Owens campus, is selling a loyalty discount card to the community benefitting study abroad scholarships.

Director of Corporate and Community Programs Christopher Moody said all proceeds from the loyalty discount card go to International Education.

“Every penny goes directly to the students,” Moody said.

Delaware Tech first presented the idea of a discount card for the students and local community to Discover Bank in December of last year.

Discover Bank helped fund the initiative, development, and the printing of the card, Moody said.

Locally owned businesses and shops put their name on the card at zero cost and were able to elect the discount of their choice.

“The loyalty discount card helps support local businesses, shops, and the community,” Moody said.

Currently, the loyalty discount card has over 70 locally owned businesses, providing discounts to the community. Discounts include a 10 percent discount at Blooming Boutique, Java 101 and Yum Yum Sweets offering a 10 percent discount, and more.

“We would love to reach 100 merchants,” Moody said.

Our goal is to become the discount card of Sussex County, Moody said. We want to get the word out, market to the community, and replace multiple discount cards with just one.

“It makes perfect sense to be the card of choice in Sussex County,” he said.

Human Services student Tyler Passwaters said the loyalty discount card is a great way for students to save money and to support their fellow classmates that plan on studying abroad.

“Being a college student, discounts are always great,” Passwaters said. “The loyalty discount card provides students and the community with tons and tons of discounts to locally owned businesses.”

Criminal Justice student Cindy Garcia said she doesn’t necessarily use discount cards because she has accumulated so many over the years from different fundraisers and organizations.

“I don’t really buy loyalty discount cards because I don’t find them rewarding in the long run,” Garcia said. “But, if they are used to help other students with scholarships, then I wouldn’t mind buying one.”

Currently, the loyalty discount cards are available for $25 to students, faculty, and the general public at www.go.dtcc.edu/discountcard or at the Georgetown campus.
