You’ve got to strut like you mean it on the catwalk

Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus, is gearing up for its annual fashion show, in an effort to show students’ passion for fashion and raise money for study abroad trips.

The Fashion Show will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Nov. 22 in the Carter Building.

Academic Advisor Denise Berry is the director once again for the show. The clothes for the fashion show are donated from local businesses in Rehoboth and Lewes, she said.

“Fashion is whatever you feel comfortable in, whatever makes you ‘you’,” Berry said. “Fashion is whatever makes you laugh or smile, whatever is giving you confidence that day.”

There are a lot of details that go into putting together a fashion show; stores have to be contacted to determine how many outfits can be shown on the runway and the models have to be chosen after tryouts, said Berry. Tryouts occurred on Sep. 18.

There are 29 student models in the show this year, Berry said.

“The students love participating in the fashion show,” Berry said, “There are even students still trying to participate.”

“It builds their self-esteem and their confidence,” Berry said. “It is something I love to see.”

Fashion show veteran model Kaitlyn Payne is excited for the show this year. She is interested in fashion and wants to become a model.

“Fashion to me is showing off your personality with clothes, jewelry, hair, and makeup, it’s just you,” Payne said.

Payne has had previous modeling experience through last year’s fashion show and the Miss Delaware Teen Pageant a couple years ago.

“Being a model at the fashion show is really great,” she said “You get to meet new people, have fun on the runway, and learn things about yourself and others.”

“Being a model isn’t very hard,” Payne said. “As long as you’re confident in yourself, and you know this is what you want to do, you won’t have a problem.”

Veteran model Carmelle Jean-Francois loves to model and walk in the show each year.

Fashion is about being yourself and making the clothes look good, Jean-Francois said.

Jean-Francois has previous modeling experience from the Barbizon modeling school in Wilmington, and from doing the show last year.

“Being a model is fun,” Jean-Francois said. “You get to meet new people from different places and make friends,” she said.
