Delaware Tech raises money for breast cancer awareness selling t-shirts

The inaugural breast cancer awareness T-shirt sale at Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus, kicked off in the beginning of October, raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
T-shirts were purchased for $12 from the beginning of October to the Delaware Tech Goes Pink event on Oct. 14.
Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Melissa Rakes said the entire breast cancer awareness event, Delaware Tech Goes Pink, was a really interesting process.
Java 101, the marketing department, clubs, faculty, and others throughout campus joined forces to organize the Delaware Tech Goes Pink event, Dr. Rakes said.
“Our goal was to raise at least $100 between the T-shirt sale and the bra-decorating contest for the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” Dr. Rakes said.
“We surpassed our goal, which was incredible,” Dr. Rakes said. “And, we also sold out of shirts.”
The T-shirt sale and the bra-decorating contest generated more than $600 in donations to the foundation, Dr. Rakes said.
“Next year, we are striving to raise at least $1,000 to donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” Dr. Rakes said.
According to Dr. Rakes, this won’t be the last fundraiser to raise awareness.
“We might do a different type of fundraiser, product, or spin for different awareness campaigns throughout the year,” Dr. Rakes said.
Elementary education student Breanna Rubino said the T-shirt sale was a fantastic idea to promote awareness in a fashionable way.
“Donating is always such a humbling feeling,” Rubino said. “But, donating and promoting awareness is an even greater feeling.”
