Owens Campus hosts movie night

By Chelsea Wootten

The first Avenger returned to the big screen at Delaware Technical Community Colleges Marvel-ous movie night on Sept. 5 by the pond near the Student Services building.

The Student Government Association and Campus Activities Board hosted the event, with several club-run vendors set up around the free showing of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

CAB Vice President Helen Gress, who is also a member of the Occupational Therapy Assistant Club, Gay Straight Alliance and the Deaf Culture Club, helped with the setup and running of the event.

“Families are welcome, and hopefully everybody comes out and has a good time,” Gress said.

And come out they did. According to data gathered by the SGA, 217 people attended the movie.

While the event was primarily for the student body, it also doubled as a fundraiser for many of the organizations in attendance. Phi Theta Kappa sold popcorn, the OTA sold baked goods, and the SGA sold pizza, Gress said.

One of the clubs in particular, The Deaf Culture Club, was trying to raise money with its soft pretzel booth for an upcoming trip to Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., Club Advisor Ed Hall said. Gallaudet teaches deaf and hard-of-hearing students through the use of American Sign Language and English. This marks its 150th anniversary, Hall said.

“It was established in 1864,” Hall said. “Abe Lincoln signed the charter for it.”

Early Childhood Development major Jennifer Martinez, was also an attendee at the movie night. She heard about the event around campus, specifically from flyers hung throughout the college advertising the movie, and decided to go with friends, Martinez said.

“We’re just out for a good time,” Martinez said. “And it’s free.”

The next movie set to be played on campus is Cesar Chavez on Friday Sept. 26, in the Arts and Sciences Theatre from 6:30p.m.-10:00pm. The event is one of several lined up in support of Spanish Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15-Oct. 15.
