Showing it off at the Multimedia Showcase
By Colleen Carter
The Communications program at Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus had much to celebrate at its inaugural multimedia showcase held off campus at the Milton Theatre on April 30th.
The showcase was emceed by DJ Magellan of Ocean 98.1 and had a piano recital by Steve Dolnack during the reception. The event hosted work from different classes including: photography, video production, creative writing, and introduction to film. Exhibits included single photographs, themed photography exhibits, video postcards, feature stories, sequence videos, and movie trailers.
Chair of the Communications Department Rob Rector said the showcase was an event four years in the making.
“Keith Mosher and I were talking about having an event similar to the photography exhibit, but on a much larger scale,” Rector said.
After establishing a relationship with the new Milton Theatre owners, Rector said he was finally able to finish up the original idea of the showcase. He said the event exceeded all his expectations and he was impressed with the students who participated in the showcase.
“It was great to see them so proud of the work they’ve done to see it on a stage outside the college, that was the coolest part for me,” Rector said.
Communications instructor Jessica Farley was also one of the contributors behind the event. Farley praised the owners of the Milton Theatre for their cooperation and donation of the theatre.
“They let us come in days before to set up and practice and have been really gracious hosts,” Farley said.
The event will be an annual event to celebrate the entire years’ worth of student work, Farley said.
“I just hope that when the students leave the event that they feel very proud at what they’ve done at Delaware Tech,” Farley said. “I just want more than anything for those students to feel admired, to feel appreciated and to feel like their time here was valuable.”
Communications student Chelsea Wootten had multiple works in the showcase. She had a single photograph, entitled “The Moth,” and was the author and speaker of two pieces of literature, “On the Sea Dragon” and “Silhouetted”.
Although the spoken word portion was a voluntary event, Wootten encourages those in creative writing to participate next year and reminds those participating to practice.
“Practice a lot and make sure you’re dedicated because its nerve wracking getting up on that stage, but it’s worth it,” Wooten said.
The event was sponsored by Modern Mixture Too, The Upper Crust, and The Premier Centre for the Arts - Milton.
