Picture the Pieces: Spring Semester’s Photography Exhibit

By Colleen Carter

The photography students were busy putting all the pieces (and portfolios) together at this semester’s exhibit titled “The Right Piece?” The photographic exhibit was held on May 5, in the Jason Technology Center science wing from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A faculty’s choice award was handed out to the photographer who presented the most appealing photo to the anonymous faculty electors. The winner was “Frozen” by Paulina Szczepańska.

Szczepańska said her favorite part was the selection process of the photos used for the portfolios.

Szczepańska then commended the opportunity of the exhibit.

“I love that we are able to display our portfolios and be able to explain the ideas behind our photos and that people are interested in what we did and what we wanted to capture,” Szczepańska said.

Smantha Monroe, Communications student, was one of the photographers featured at the event. Monroe said choosing which pictures she wanted to place in the exhibit wasn’t so easy.

“It was hard to narrow the photos down, but with the help of my teacher I picked the ones that were the best to display,” Monroe said.

Inspiration of her final photographs came from past assignments and her children, Monroe said.

Monroe also praised the spotlight she’s been given over the semester.

“I’m just honored to be able to have my work shown and I’m proud to be a Del Tech Communications student,” Monroe said.

The person who was most pleased with the students work was the instructor of the course, Keith Mosher. Mosher watched over the exhibit and presented the award at the conclusion of the event.

Mosher lauded his class with the amount of work they accomplished in such a short time due to learning the basics in the beginning, snow days, and preparation for the end of semester events.

“It’s always surprising on how far the students’ progress from the beginning, from not knowing how to turn on the camera through what they have on display at the end of the semester,” Mosher said. “Students should be really proud of because they are basically doing that in twelve weeks.”

This wasn’t the first exhibit for the photography students. Mosher said this semester had the fortune to have photographs displayed for the school’s gala, the multimedia showcase held at the Milton Theatre, and now the campus exhibit.

“They’ve had a lot more exposure and experience displaying photographs than any class has had in the past and had to do it all in a timely fashion,” Mosher said.
