Opening the mic to students

By Kacy Cassat

Students were able to show off their talents at the open mic event on Feb. 7 in the Dining Hall in the Student Services Center.

Kerri Harmon, event coordinator, academic counselor and student life coordinator at Delaware Technical Community College, said anyone may audition. Previous Open Mic events have had musicians, comedians and even poets.

Paul Garner, a cook from Lighthouse Cove in the Owens Campus Dining Hall, performed for the second time at the Open Mic event.

Garner has been playing the acoustic guitar for the past nine years.

“I was very glad that Ms. Harmon gave me the opportunity to play again,” said Garner. “I love the exposure. It’s fun and it’s something in my own element.”

Several students from the Music Club were at the Open Mic event to show their support and also to perform.

Music Club President Justin Gabbard, Vice President Tyler Meding, treasurer William Behrens, and Samantha Walls, all performed a dramatic poem they had written at the event.

“There usually is a pretty big turnout ,and, even if people aren’t here to see it, they have entertainment while they eat,” said Meding. “It’s cool to be here and support the people on stage.”

Harmon stated she would love to hear feedback from the students. She wants to include as many participants as possible for Owens Campus activities, as well as plan events that students would enjoy.

“We want to offer opportunities to students on campus who are talented, to get up and show off their talent,” Harmon said. “We have a Delaware Tech’s Got Talent show coming up on March 7, so this Open Mic event might be a good place for students to be interested in participating in the talent show.”

The final Delaware Tech’s Got Talent show sponsored by the Owens Campus Performing Arts Club will be on Thursday, March 7, from 5 to 11 in the Arts and Science Center. Everyone is welcome to attend. For more information contact Kerri Harmon at kharmon2@dtcc.edu.
