It's a Delaware Tech Halloween
By Brian Eastburn
Superheroes, ghouls, celebrities and even a giant deer all assembled in the dining hall during the Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus, Halloween costume and pumpkin carving event on Oct. 31.
The event, held by Student Life, included bowls full of free candy, a costume contest that many students and faculty took part in and a pumpkin carving contest from a diversity of students and groups.
According to Delaware Tech student Haley Eskridge, Halloween is the best holiday of the year.
“It’s the one time a year when you can be whoever you want and not be judged,” Eskridge said.
Derek Street who entered the contest as Django from the film “Django Unchained,” didn’t intend on actually being Django when he left his house in the morning.
“I left the house as a vampire,” Street said. “Everyone kept calling me Django. So I just went with it.”
Street went with it and he wound up winning the costume contest.
Some of the other characters in the costume contest included Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Batman, “The Big Bang Theory” gang and a giant deer.
The pumpkin carving had quite a few entries, including a pumpkin carved with the state of Delaware by the Delaware Tech Future Farmers of America. The winner was the pumpkin carving of the Justice League entered by Candy Fortney, Robert Karpin and Marcus Wright.
The event turnout in its entirety it seemed to be a big success according to Delaware Tech, Owens Campus, Student Government Vice President Laura Gagnon.
“I thought the Halloween event went great,” Gagnon said. “We had an excellent turnout and the students seemed to enjoy the costume and pumpkin contests.”
