Fulmele lands lead in Romeo and Juliet
By Shane A. Smith
The Performing Arts Club (PAC) has officially posted the cast list for the modern adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The list can be located outside of room 920, which is Chala Breen’s office in the Student Services Center.
The part of Juliet will be portrayed by Nikki Fulmele. Fulmele says that it felt incredibly surreal when she got the part of Juliet. “I love acting,” Fulmele said, “but when I transitioned to college, it was difficult to get involved with having to manage schoolwork and work.”
Fulmele is a sophomore at Delaware Tech’s Owens campus who has taken theater classes through all four years of high school at Sussex Central High School. She has also played minor roles in three Shakespearian plays such as ‘Julius Caesar’, ‘The Twelfth Night’, and the traditional version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’.
Fulmele says that she did not originally sign up for Juliet, but was actually interested in either the Nurse or Lady Capulet. According to Fulmele, in every version of the play, Juliet is the typical and naïve lover. “She falls in love with Romeo,” Fulmele said. “And not only does she fall in love with him, but she is willing to risk everything for that love.”
In addition to stage acting she has worked at Screams at the Beach scream park in Georgetown as a ‘scare actress’.” A scare actor is a person who portrays horror characters and engages audiences in a scare entertainment environment, such as a haunted house or live horror experience.
“When I heard that PAC was holding auditions for the play,” stated Fulmele, “I took the opportunity, and I’m glad I did because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have been able to be in a show with all of the other wonderful, hilarious actors and actresses. I also wouldn’t have my first lead role.”
Fulmele says she is excited for the play because she believes that it is going to be entertaining and something to look forward to.
“This play is absolutely ridiculous, in a good way,” Fulmele stated. “It is hilarious, crass, and everything you would hope a modern version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ would be. Everyone will definitely enjoy it and have a few laughs.”
The role of Romeo has not been officially casted as of now. Auditions for the part of Romeo, as well as extras for the play, will be held on Tuesday, February 25 in the theater at the Arts and Science Center. If anyone would like to audition, they are encouraged to contact club advisor and director of the play Gayle Parola at gparola@dtcc.edu. PAC meets every Tuesday from 3:30 to 5:00 pm and Friday from noon to 2:00 pm in the theater.
