FFA – More than just agriculture

By Kacy Cassat

Delaware Technical Community College Collegiate FFA officers, advised by Daniele Kidd, were able to take time after their meeting on Feb. 8 and explain what it is like being an FFA officer at the collegiate level.

Susan Stant, Delaware Tech FFA reporter, has been an officer at Delaware Tech for the past two years. Stant graduated in 2009 from Colonel Richardson High School in Caroline County, Md. She has been in FFA since her junior year of high school.

“It’s just like a family. All the officers get along so well, and we all have class together,” Stant said.

Stant also stated that it’s great to be a part of this organization because it makes people more aware of agriculture through meeting local agricultural businesses.

Cody Stubbs, the Delaware Tech FFA treasurer, has been an officer for the past three semesters and graduated from Polytech in 2011.

“Our overall goal this year is to try to get more membership,” Stubbs said. “Students should join the FFA because it helps improve your leadership skills, and it’s really rewarding to help out with community services.”

Jenna Hitchens, the Delaware Tech FFA secretary, graduated from Sussex Central. This is her first year serving as an officer and being an FFA member.

Hitchens decided to run for an officer position because it seemed like fun, and she likes leadership roles. Hitchens said, since she has joined, there has never been a dull moment, and it has gotten her more involved in college.

Courtney Capotrio, Delaware Tech FFA vice president, graduated from Middletown High School in 2010. She was in FFA all four years in high school and three years at the collegiate level.

Capotrio stated that while being in the FFA she has gotten a lot out of it. She has received scholarships and has been able to attend National Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., for her Agriscience Fair project.

“Students should join the FFA because it’s a good opportunity, and it teaches them responsibility and leadership,” Capotrio said.

Chelsea Hudson, Delaware Tech FFA president, graduated from Delmar High School in 2010. This is her first year serving as an officer and also as an FFA member.

“It was actually my first year that I joined FFA and all of the old officers were heading out and they were looking for somebody, so I applied for a general position and received the position as president," Hudson said. “Most of our officers are graduating in the spring, so we are really trying to grow membership and find the new leaders to take over for the officer team.”

Becoming an FFA member is open to any student on campus. The FFA meetings are every other Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the Greehouse by the Agriculture Building by the south entrance of the Enviromental Center.
