Great hitting propels Delaware Tech win

By Bryce Evans

The Delaware Technical Community College, Owens Campus softball team, The Roadrunners, were swinging bats and making plays resulting in an 8-1 win against Community College of Baltimore County.

The Roadrunners played in Catonsville, Md. on Sept. 21 against the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) and delivered a dominating performance. The Roadrunners got into the swing quickly, starting out the top of the first inning with three runs.

Delaware Tech softball coach Wayne Price said, “They hit the ball as well as I thought we could hit it; we were hitting better than the last four or five games.”

In the bottom of the first inning, the opposing team scored one run, but Delaware Tech answered back in the top of the second inning with the tying run.  In the top of the third inning CCBC’s defense was on point. There were three batters and three outs. No strikeouts were delivered, but all the batted balls were caught at shortstop.

“I wouldn’t change anything as far as team performance,” shortstop Lauren Illian said. “We played a rough inning and we learned from it.”

In the top of the fifth inning three more runs were scored by Delaware Tech. Clouds and rain took over the sky at the bottom of the sixth inning. Spectators ran for cover under pavilions and trees.

“The rain definitely affected the game, especially pitching,” said Samantha Muir, Delaware Tech’s pitcher for the last half of the game.

Illian agreed the rain made the game slightly more difficult due to the cold and wet conditions. Delaware Tech finished out the seventh inning with one more run, finalizing the 8-1 victory.

Muir said, “Our team played great, our defense was a bit unstable but that was it.”

The Roadrunners next game is next Saturday at Wilmington University, Delaware, from 1pm to 5pm.
