Creative Writing and Photography Class Come Together for a Unique Assignment
By Kimberly Huffman
If a picture is worth a thousand words, what are a thousand words worth? The Creative Writing Club and the Introduction to Photography class joined forces in October for a two-part assignment that challenged both groups to push their artistry.
The Creative Writing Club wrote short stories and Photography students used those stories as inspiration for photos.
Photography instructor Keith Mosher said he was impressed with the stories and wanted to give the students an opportunity to work with another group.
Mosher said the assignment resembled a group work environment.
“It takes the pressure off of you having to come up with everything on your own,” Mosher said, “but also gives you a little bit of a test to see what you can come up with creatively.”
“It was neat to see how people still came up with different things even though they were given the same story,” Mosher said.
Mosher randomly arranged the stories into numbered groups of three, and had students pick numbers to decide which stories they would get. None of the students had access to the stories before that class. Three students were assigned each story in an attempt to bring variety.
Creative Writing President Marquetta Nelson was invited to the class critique, which took place on Oct. 21.
Out of three options, Nelson was asked to choose the one photo that went best with the story.
“It was an amazing experience, I wish [the other members] were all there to experience,” Nelson said. “You guys just did amazing.”
At the end of the semester, the Creative Writing Club plans to write stories based upon photos submitted by the Photography class.
